In a time when money seems to be tight for everyone, jewelry is aiming to make its presence felt. From high dollar to low price, these accessories are – and always have been – a solid performer in the wholesale and retail industry. What makes them so valuable is not always the materials they are made with, but the kind of marketing and value offer that is attached to them in the process. You’ve been combing the category lists of toptenwholesale.com, manufacturer.com, wholesaleu.com, and offpricenetwork.com, looking for general merchandise, apparel, accessories, gifts, electronics, handbags, toys, and… jewelry. You’ve probably seen the long list of dealers and manufacturers that offer great products at discounted prices, too. Well, the lesson here is all that glitters is not made of gold, and today I’m going to look into some options that provide sparkling solutions to the sellers who don’t necessarily want to go exclusively with heavy hitting haute couture style… but maybe something unique and fun that will give customers an accessible product that delivers. If you are looking to spend more for your inventory of shimmering items, I’ll be giving a few pointers in the direction of these as well. There’s a piece of jewelry for everyone out there!

First of all, let’s get some basics out of the way. Jewelry is as diverse and varied as any other fashion item, and the choices can be dizzying for the first timer who has little experience with this product. It seems that there’s a color, shape, size, style, and flavor out there for everyone… and figuring out the right one for your online seller site or physical storefront will undoubtedly present some rather pressing questions. There is hope, however; choosing the right jewelry for your business can be as easy as leaning towards the stuff you like, or simply deciding which target market you’d like to cater to. Both options are fine in the strictest sense, but they might also come with their own drawbacks, as well. If you’re going to sell the goods you are personally inspired by, you’ll have to thicken your hide a tad, in order to deflect any bad feelings when buyers are less than crazy about your pick of the week. On the other hand, selling goods you don’t personally have an interest in might become redundant and boring, especially if you’re targeting a market that you have no affiliation with, or general understanding of. It’s probably best to blend these ideologies together, and find a happy medium.

Ready for some ideas now? Let’s see what’s coming up in the world of jewelry sales, and maybe you’ll see something that catches your eye:

  • I found a lot of buzz lately over the Steampunk jewelry that is making waves these days. For those who don’t know, this style is something like a cross between Mad Max and Dracula, a kind of blending of the aesthetics that make up an industrial age of steam-operated machinery, and the Victorian era. These seem to range in price, but average 50USD (retail) for the most part… and they are getting a lot of attention in international markets like Japan and China right now.
  • The big guns are smoking, too… as the Fédération de la Couture Française ramps up its show with names like Boucheron, Cartier, Chanel Joaillerie, Christian Dior Joaillerie, Mellerio dits Meller, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Chaumet, to name a few. This show, which will be taking place towards the end of january 2010, will bring with it the hopes of designers and manufacturers in the luxury goods category who have been feeling some sting from their usual markets, in light of the recent financial downturn.
  • Sambucks Co, Ltd. is taking pet jewelry to the overseas market. On a recently-released profile for a major Chinese wholesale site, a seller named Mr. Huang explains how he was able to market his pet-oriented supplies to buyers in overseas markets, after finding his domestic sales less than purrr-fect.
  • Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been making news for a while now, and the latest coming from the famed celeb couple is their newest venture to produce a line of jewelry called ‘The Protector’ and embellished with a snake-themed motif that draws its inspiration from a piece that was given to Jolie during her first pregnancy. Looks like custom jewelry and custom-looks will be making their mark on the indutstry.
  • There’s no shortage of fake goods to choose from, and one solution Chanel came up with long ago was to take back some of that pilfered market share by pairing jumbo-sized faux pearls with precious metals, to create a look that was considered almost criminally daring at the time. These days, costume jewelry is everywhere, and it actually leads to some great designer-inspired looks that work well on their own. Price points are lower, and your ability to offer mashups of false + genuine articles will increase your saleability, especially at a time when paying for the expensive stuff might be beyond reach.
  • Meanwhile, down in Mississippi… there are rockhounds digging up beautiful and unique stones and gems that make the locals flock from miles around to take a gander. “This is an art show that includes science and education. We have several stones on display with educational information. We’ve had scout troops looking to complete their merit badges. We’ve had about 100 or so geology students. We’ve have people come from as far away as New Orleans.” says John Wright, president of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Gem and Mineral Society.
  • Zale Corporation announced that their e-commerce business showed particular strength with revenue growth of 17% during the quarter, in a first quarter fiscal 2010 earnings conference call that should serve as a wake-up call to those who are doubting the power of the Internet, when it comes to making sales.
  • The story of Suzette Martinez Standring, a blind jewelry designer, is enough to make anyone believe in their own abilities to grab life by the tail, and make something happen. Her designs have been featured through Harrods, and serve as a channel for the designer to promote her campaign for blindness education and awareness.
  • Watch out for retro fashion jewelry to take center stage, as the influx of new and sometimes overbearing designs will undoubtedly produce a backlash from beleaguered consumers who want to remember the good old days… whenever those may have been. Whether it’s the rubber rings and plastic accessories of the 1980’s, or the pearl and dainty bracelts of the 1950’s… people like to go back to what what they know.
  • For those who still aren’t convinced that there is a market available in the jewelry game, please make note of the fact that at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, IL they are selling necklace pendants made from dried reindeer dung, just in time for the holiday season. The less said about this one, the better… but they are reportedly going to charge 10-20USD for it!
