Peace Signs Blooming in 2009
By Julie Hall for Cool Jewels
Hey, is that a flower in your hair? In Retail Shopping 2009, another symbol of the Summer of Love is a big hit and blooming everywhere.
Take a look at a current sizzling hot fashion trend seen on celebrities, models and average mall shoppers – Peace Sign Jewelry .
Now step back several decades: How about a tie-dye shirt from the 1970s? You do recall all those Volkswagen Beetles covered with hand-painted daisies, peace signs and the word GROOVY, don’t you? Retro or not, stepping back to that long ago era makes us feel better.
Peace signs have humble beginnings in the early sixties, used as a rallying symbol to stop nuclear proliferation. They traveled to Woodstock, where people painted peace symbols on signs, their clothing and their bodies to express their heartfelt desire for peace and harmony throughout our world. Peace signs in any shape and size have always represented desire for a better world.
Today — as the symbol of peace turns 50 — they are found on clothes and posters, furniture, bedding, fashionable jewelry and car emblems.
Let’s also acknowledge those who pursue the message of peace by raising awareness of the limited resources of our home, Planet Earth. Al Gore (former Vice President, Statesmen, Educator and Nobel Prize Laureate) has helped us understand the need to change our ways to save our home – labeling his collected environmental and global protection insights An Inconvenient Truth. This is a message of change and peace that Al Gore has carried around the globe for nearly 10 years.
The peace sign found around our necks, on our wrists, on T-shirts and cars have become far more than fashionable – they’re personal symbols of a better tomorrow. Peace signs signify hope.
So, go ahead: Wear a fashion statement with a noble history, like a Peace Sign Necklace from Cool Jewels.
Keep a look out for the Peace Sign’s comeback in its 50th anniversary year. They’re blooming everywhere. Because the desire for world peace is as strong in 2009 as it was right after the Summer of Love in the late 1960s, I’ll give the last word to musician John Lennon: Give Peace A Chance.

Guess where I saw a rhinestoned PEACE SYMBOL bracelet today??
In a hospital gift shop. Waaaaa?
Started with a hospital visit to a 94-year old aunt who broke her hip bungee jumping. (A lie :-O but it made her laugh thru the pain)
… who had a craving for dark chocolate Dove squares, available in the hospital gift shop. Success.
But when I spotted the rhinestoned peace symbol bracelet, I asked the in-hospital Gift Store Mgr if peace symbols were selling lately.
Her reply: >>Oh, yeah. That bracelet is all I have left from the shipment.<<
I told her I had “inside info” and the Peace Symbol turns 50 years old this year … a big birthday for the favorite image of peace-loving souls and Hippies At Heart everywhere.
“No wonder,” said she. And “Maybe I should re-order, huh?”
