Hats are never going to go away, and there's a hat for every head out there. You've got to figure out which style, material, and price is right for your customer, though. That can be tough to do when there's so many choices out there for the wholesale and retail specialists, but I'm going to give a few pointers in this blog post in the hope that it will provide some useful guidelines to what's selling this season. Read on to find out more...

Among the wide array of fashion accessories for both men and women, none have been as varied – except maybe shoes – as the humble hat. It can give you a feeling of power… or make you shrink away into the shadows when you don’t want to be noticed. The right hat can give you an authoritative look… or make you seem mysterious and even shadowy. Let’s face it, hats are not going away… and as a savvy wholesale or retail specialist, you should pay attention to the fact that Winter is going to bring a whole new wave of customers who want to put a lid on their domes this season! Take a look at our own Toptenwholesale.com search results page to see some examples of companies that offer great hats at unbeatable prices! To see more ideas, check out manufacturer.com, wholesaleu.com, and offpricenetwork.com as well as a huge selection of general merchandise, apparel, accessories, gifts, electronics, handbags, jewelry, toys, and more!

Today I’m going to give you a little bit of help in selecting the right hat for your wholesale business, especially for those of you who are doing online sales and e-tailing.

Choosing the hats to carry can be a lot like selling shoes, or watches, or even jewelry… but the price point is much lower, and that can make it easier for you to offer a wide variety of styles and materials, instead of cautiously keeping a limited supply on hand.

The style choices and trends in the hat business follow distinctly cyclical cycles, which means that your inventory of hats that aren’t selling today could be flying off the shelves tomorrow!

It’s also got a lot to do with the seasonality of wardrobe choices, since Winter tends to bring the richer and plusher fabrics to the fore… and these are always complimented nicely by a proper hat. Keep your eye on what materials are hot right now for jackets and scarves, and you will already have a good idea of what kind of hat material will pair up nicely.

Hollywood has never made it easier to follow the fashion, as movies have brought hats back in a big way. Kate Hudson with a wide brim, the normally glammy Beyonce in a simple knitted wool hat, Brad Pitt and his signature newsboy cap, Mickey Rourke and the rugged cowboy hat. I’ve even noticed Justin Timberlake… who – in my opinion – has always been a bit of a fashion victim, but making news nonetheless in a variety of hats that customers are eager to find for themselves. You should be helping those customers find them, on your site.

As you can see, picking the hat isn’t the biggest issue… since there’s something for everyone out there, and a lot of existing marketing to support your selections. On the other hand, you’ve got to make sure that you stand out in the crowd when it comes to offering your customers the right blend of fashion and service. Here’s a few things you’ll want to keep your mind on, as you set up your site with a smoking-hot deal on hats:

Make sure people know about your quality hat selection… whether you’re selling MLB caps, Stetson, Kangol, Cubavera, or even some of the designer-inspired gear… slap those logos up on your page! It will give your buyers something to reinforce their feeling of satisfaction, knowing that they’ve found a site that isn’t afraid to show who they carry.

Selection is important… since there’s a hat for ever head, you need to carry a good range of choices. Be varied, and don’t be afraid to put two seemingly contrasting styles next to each other. After all, the one who gets noticed is going to get the sale.

Make it easy to order… offer service online 24/7, design product category pages that are easy to navigate, create informative individual product pages are full of detailed color samples and other helpful information, etc… be creative!

SSL provides encryption between web browsers and web servers… so make sure you’re using it. Putting a big header on your order page that says “100% Secure Ordering 128-bit encryption key over Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to provide the highest level of security” will only help you secure the sale, when the customer hesitates to click the buy button. Just make sure you’ve actually set it up correctly, or you’ll be dealing with some major headaches later on.

Brag a little… about your customer satisfaction, that is. Offer a little insight into your store’s history, and give some testimonials from happy customers. Be honest. This will only lead to more sales with other happy customers, and everyone will win in the end.

Well, there it is… my little primer for those who want to throw their hat into the ring… and get going in the hat game. You want my personal point of view on the hottest hat trend for the season? I have always been keen on basic knitted watch caps myself, but I’m going to go out on a limb here… and say that for the ladies, cloche hats will make a big comeback. This one sure looks good on Hillary Swank, and it will look good on a lot of other girls out there too!

Competition heats up this Summer as the China-based B2B giant Alibaba takes a turn into the treacherous waters of B2C wholesale and distribution, with its newest platform catering to the masses. Will this be enough to buck the trend of scams and shams in the murky waters of international trade? Time will tell, but the informed wholesaler /retailer should be on top of the information, in order to anticipate how this will affect us all.

It’s always with quite a dose of skepticism that I see huge, publicly-listed companies like Alibaba taking a shot at appealing to the individuals that make up a market that was once too small and insignificant for them to address before.

Sign of the times? You bet. Sign of things to come? You’d better believe it. This is where the rubber meets the road, as those little individual consumers suddenly represent a very powerful piece of market share that was always considered too volatile and easily influenced by uncontrollable factors in the economy. Now that so many companies in the heavy-hitting export sector – not only in China, by the way – have started to gasp for air, the need for innovation is strong, and only the strongest innovators will come out on top.

Does the move to tap the B2C market signal weakness or strength for Alibaba? A lot of people will say that it’s just a logical move to extend coverage, and pick up some slack as their original sales engine slows down… but there’s a lot of other people who are getting nervous about the sheer size of a company like this one taking steps to try to become the one-size-fits-all solution for selling on the Internet. Granted, the Chinese government will undoubtedly continue to pump money into this darling of a company, especially since it consistently ranks high on the list of “China SuperBrands”, and let’s not forget that the company also supports a vast multitude of domestic employees. Also bear in mind that we haven’t hit the 2010 mark yet, and there’s still a lot that can go wrong before the CCP proudly announces its safety-net 8% GDP year-end goal being met. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that this number will be produced, but will it be a case of art imitating reality, or reality imitating art? Numbers are easy to manipulate, and it’s been done more than a few times already.

Should other players in the market, like ebay and PayPal be wringing their hands yet? With the launch of Alibaba’s proprietary AliPay online payment system, I guess it would make sense that the other titans of online sales would be wise to watch this event carefully, but it’s all up to the consumer on this one, and I have seen the truth with my own eyes. While deals can be made with huge distributors and retailers –- all too often to manipulate the market and keep people in the dark about their buying choices — the Internet truly is the great equalizer, and there’s a reason why countries like the PRC employ strategies to censor and control the stream of information that enlightens consumers… and makes corrupt dealers writhe in pain over the education that is freely accessible to all.

Look to sources of information like the ones here at toptenwholesale.com for a chance to see some of the less popular (and perhaps even less-tolerated?) forms of opinion that could be the difference between simply following along with the program you are handed… and making a new program of your own that results in building a business that gives you the control you need to not only profit from your hard work, but maybe even empower you with the ability to deliver the solution to your customers without being part of the problem.

What is a wholesale dropshipper? Is it …

1: A supply chain technique through which The Retailer works directly with Manufacturers and Wholesalers, who ship merchandise directly to The Retailer’s Customers;

2: A smart way to avoid keeping excess inventory in stock. A way to manage a profitable merchandise reselling business without keeping any merchandise on hand;

3. A savvy way to start up a Home-Based Resale Business or be an eBay Powerseller; OR

4. All the above.

The right answer is, of course, #4: All the above.

Dropshipping 1,000,000s of available products to your customers – directly from a wholesaler or manufacturer warehouse – is the profitable way to start up your own small business. You don’t have to work all the logistics of warehousing, inventory audits and storage hassles; or shipping, delivery and product fulfillment. You can concentrate on marketing and promoting your reseller business and meeting customer service needs.

Here are Top Ten Wholesale’s 7 tips on types of dropshippers, product offerings and levels of the game.

Focus retail on one dropshipped product category, like Toner Dropship.com.

Toner Dropship Banner Ad

1. Focus on One Discount Product Category: Toner Dropship.com is the source for discount printer inkjet and laser/fax toner cartridges, plus affordable quality imaging and printer supplies. Toner Dropship works with quality manufacturers – see their top web page navigation buttons for OEM brands like Brother, Canon, Dell, HP, Konica-Minolta, Kyocera-Mita, Lexmark, Samsung – who ship product directly to Toner Dropship’s retail buyers.

2. Own Your Own Customers’ Satisfaction: Toner Dropship offers attentive Customer Service, Support and a 100% Satisfaction guarantee. So, the end customer enjoys a risk-free buyer experience.

Also, Toner Dropship.com uses its shopping cart checkout page to poll its retail buyers. Community Poll offers a good list of answers for: Why Purchase Products Online? (More convenient shipping and delivery; Lower price; Bigger choice; Centralized product search procedure … without having to leave your home; Payments security; 30-day Money Back Guarantee.)

3. Speaking of Security and Trust: Very important for any online commerce site – especially for a dropshipping reseller who deals with many wholesalers and manufacturers further up the supply chain – is a valid seal as a Verified Business and Secure Payment Processor.

Sure, you may not consciously notice those little logos at the bottom of web pages that indicate “Business Verified” by Trust Guard, eTrust, BBB OnLine Reliability etc. However, buyers who are about to enter financial data, credit card numbers or business purchase orders DO NOTICE when those little seals of approval are missing. It’s a “trust” thing.

Toner Dropship.com displays the seal: Verified Merchant — Authorize.Net Online Payments.

Get tips and tactics from Sell and Profit -– also known as DropshipHQ — to drop ship 1,000,000s of products directly to customers and/or become an eBay Powerseller.

4. Drop Shipping & Online Auction Advice: At Sell and Profit.com, you’ll find “eBay and Drop Shipping Advice, Articles and Humor.” File HUMOR: Why the odd, strange and weird eBay sale items? (The Miracle Boot Shaped French Fry! The $60.98 Flexy Straw! Easter Bunny-shaped Popcorn!)

File HOT TIPS: Advance notice of Fee-Free Auction Days, like eBay’s waiver of traditional listing fees for two weeks this past March.

File BEWARE BUYING CLOSEOUTS: Tips to avoid problems in Buying Closeout Liquidation Clearance Items … Oh My! if you plan to resell closeout and liquidation merchandise in online auctions.

Start an eBay Business

5. Free Trial to Start an eBay Business: An affiliate of DOBA and an eBay Certified Provider, Sell and Profit.com (DropshipHQ.net) offers a 4-step plan to make money dropshipping products directly to customers … and locating suppliers of over 1,000,000 products available to online sellers, eBay powersellers and dropshippers.

Take the 3-minute Free Trial Tour from Sell and Profit’s web site button. Or click here at the DOBA PPC Tour link.

6. Manufacturers Who Dropship: Sell and Profit.com (DropshipHQ.net) is a Business Verified by Trust Guard, the BBB OnLine Reliability Program, and is also an eBay Certified Provider. As a small sample of dropshipping opportunities available to certified providers, Sell and Profit.com lists these merchandise manufacturers:

Dropshipping Manufacturers

7. Wholesale Pricing Guarantee: As an affiliate of DOBA, Sell and Profit.com extends its Wholesale Pricing Guarantee. They promise the lowest wholesale merchandise prices to you, as an online auction reseller/dropshipper. Or, they offer up to $120 in free membership. Rewards Back price guarantees are common at the end buyer and retail customer end of the supply chain. So, it’s nice to see a lowest price guarantee that works for Home-based Businesses and Online Auctioneers, too.

eBay PowerSellers, Craft Fair Vendors, Niche Market Discounters and Flea Market Entrepreneurs can now source products at the right price points, and in the right minimum order quantities, from online auction and sale sites.

Advantages of Online Product Sourcing

· Source merchandise for resale at discounted, wholesale pricing;

· Online bid and auction systems that let buyers set minimum and maximum bids and also receive emailed alerts when their max bid is approached by a new competitive bidder for the same listing;

· Levels the merchandise resale playing field by offsetting bigger manufacturer, wholesaler and distributor competition. Online auction and sales sites increasingly offer products across all categories, for purchase at below-wholesale or returned inventory liquidation prices … that can be purchased in smaller lots or No Minimum order sizes.

Online product sourcing can level the field between small-order eBay sellers, and buyers further up the product supply chain (such as Discount Store suppliers), who have the credit lines, warehouses and infrastructure to buy by the pallet or truckload.

· Legal product sourcing in smaller quantities. Major brands and stores – especially higher-priced luxury goods like Coach leather, or national brand stores with their own labels such as Toys R Us and Target Corporation – have engaged in gray-market legal battles with sites like eBay.

Some resellers at eBay, Amazon.com, Craig’s List and regional Flea Markets were acquiring their inventory in underhanded ways. Methods included buying quantities from major department store chains (Target, Macy’s, Dillards) during store sales … then returning what they didn’t sell at auction within the stores’ 30-day Returns period. Or hoarding higher-priced designer brand handbags, purchased at private Member Sales, which then showed up at online auction sites or urban street fairs. This produced brand manager nightmares and provoked aggressive trademark lawsuits, plus pressure on sites like eBay to exclude “gray-market” listings.

However, increased availability of auction sites that offer legal store returns and liquidation lots, or No Minimum Order options, is helping to legalize the product supply chain.

Auction Sites By Product Category

Search Top Ten Wholesale’s network and directories of global manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and resellers in 50+ different merchandise categories.

· Search for Auctions at Top Ten Wholesale …

· Or refine your search by a product category, such as TTW Electronics

See the site search page at http://www.toptenwholesale.com and click on one of over 50 Wholesale Keyword products categories (ABC – Apparel, Body Jewelry, Cellular – to TVW – Trade Shows, Videos, Watches).

Sites By Product Source & Price

GENCO Marketplace has an established industry track record for supplying store returns, overstocks and seasonal returns to liquidation and store retailers … generally through direct and online sales by the truckload or multiple pallets. GENCO Marketplace moves over $5 Million worth of merchandise every day through such re-sale channels in product categories ranging from Electronics and Apparel to Housewares and Tools. Many of these large liquidation lots feature online manifests, so that buyers know what they’re purchasing.

No Better Deal brings new and returned merchandise deals to consumers, bargain hunters, online auction resellers and flea market merchants … with the discount/liquidation prices formerly available only to big lot buyers. Clearance priced merchandise with no order minimums.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Changing Times in Merchandise Liquidation
By GENCO Marketplace
B2B Wholesaler of Distressed Inventories
GENCO Marketplace, which liquidates more than $5 Million worth of product every day, began offering liquidation services in 1992 to reverse logistics customers, who wanted to maximize recovery value on their returned goods.
Back then, the priority for companies was simply getting rid of their distressed merchandise as fast as possible in order to empty the warehouse and cut costs. “Liquidation” may have been accomplished back then in parking lot sales to employees or simply destroying the goods.
For many of GENCO Marketplace’s early customers, we offered a new revenue stream. They were happy with even a small return on their distressed inventory.
How things have changed!!
Today, liquidation is a business. Companies now have budget targets for liquidation revenue and they’ve developed sophisticated programs to maximize recovery value, while minimizing overhead costs.
A few of the changes we have seen over the years, and how those changes are impacting salvage buyers, include:
Internet As Prime Channel. At one time in the recent past, the primary buyers of salvage were discount retailers, flea marketers and brokers. Today, a legion of Internet-based businesses has entered the fray, including eBay power sellers. The Internet has become a prime channel for moving liquidation merchandise.
· For buyers of liquidation merchandise, this means more competition for product and escalating prices. Retailers who formerly liquidated only by the truckload are now conducting Internet auctions for some of the same goods. While you may pay more for loads, increased demand in the secondary market allows you to charge more and make a fair profit.
· Overall, the Internet has been a positive force in the industry, by expanding the market for returned and closeout merchandise.
· On the flip side, Internet as prime liquidation channel has also invited rogue practices. For example, some businesses simply “flipped” loads without ever taking possession. (They found a load for sale online and, before buying the load themselves, they may attempt to sell it online for a profit.) But, after executing a sale, those businesses may learn that the product they “sold” is, in fact, no longer available for purchase.
In instances like the above example, we’ve seen “flippers” purchase a similar load and misrepresent it as the load originally offered. To avoid such rogue practices, you should deal only with sources of supply you know and trust.
Lower Risk From More Visible Load Content. Buyers once purchased mixed loads of various commodities, and they had to wait for delivery to see exactly what they’d purchased. Today, sophisticated liquidators publish online manifests that list products, descriptions, volumes and original value for all items in the load.
These manifests eliminate much of the risk associated with purchasing loads “blind.” Buyers should take advantage of this visibility to know what you’re buying, in advance.
Changed Buying from Higher Freight Costs. Higher freight costs are squeezing profits, translating to less margin for error on load purchases. Buyers used to be willing to gamble more on liquidation loads; but, today, few buyers purchase goods located on the other side of the country. It’s best to find sources of supply with locations near yours, or work with a large liquidator who locates multiple warehouses throughout the country.
Decreased Profit Margins on Electronics Loads. Electronics loads used to be more profitable. Today, retailers and manufacturers are more likely to cherry pick high-quality products from electronics loads, diminishing the load’s value. Also, because the next generation of products are introduced so rapidly, electronics products devalue quickly. So, loads must be remarketed and sold in a hurry … or profits are jeopardized.
Future Trend in Liquidation Merchandise
Economic recession is pressuring retailers. They’re both smarter and more cautious about purchases. This trend is likely to decrease the supply of returns and closeouts, which may increase liquidation load prices.
The only certain predictions we can make:
· The supply of liquidated goods will constantly change based on market demand for particular products, and the specific strategies of retailers and manufacturers.
· The most successful liquidation merchandise buyers are the ones who best adapt to this ever-changing business.
No? I didn’t think so.
This one is for you, Betty. And for any online entrepreneur on a budget who needs to go beyond SEO for Beginners.
The WholesaleU Blog posted Beginners Guide to SEO with basic steps to get your web site noticed by the Deaf, Dumb and Blind search engine spider “bots,” so that your site shows up on Search Engine Results Pages. Bullet-point Search Engine Optimization Basics are:
· Get your essential key words (business, product lines, price points, sales events) into web page Heads and Copy;
· Aim for the right ratio of key words to web page words … without SPAMMING the spider;
· Put your key word descriptives into the Home Page Meta Tag Fields, which only the spiders see;
· Do not depend too much on graphics and images to carry web page messages, since the spiders can’t see them.
Betty replied: Thanks for the tips. I have tried the basics in my web sites. … But how can I rise up to page one when somebody searches for “wholesale handbags?”
We know what Betty faces, right? She mentioned Google; and we’ve all eyeballed that eye-popping line at the top-right edge of search results pages: Results 1-15 of 548,788 Results Found. Since Internet Usage research shows that typical searchers rarely go beyond Page One or Page Two search results – approximately 25-to-30 sites – there is not much marketing value in being listed beyond page 2 SERPs. Hasta la vista to the other 548,760 results found. They won’t be back.
Here are some bullet-point SEO tips that go beyond beginner:
· Time to Get Off the Reservation? This is a highline search marketing strategy rather than a handy practical tip. But, Betty mentioned wanting to rank high on search results for “wholesale handbags.” And that was after mentioning the consumer-focused search engine that holds well over 60% of search engine market share … Google. What’s wrong with this picture?
Google does a terrific job at pulling up millions of keyword matches and indexing a wide swath of the cyber-terrain. But Betty modified her hypothetical search on “handbags” with the term “wholesale.” Google’s indexing spiders will find results for both terms, independently and together; though a searcher may not find the results until Page 128 on the SERPs. Or, never.
Wholesalers of anything need to get off general search engine reservations and go vertical, to search sites, product directories and industry sites that serve “wholesalers” or “handbags” or “apparel accessories” or all the above. Try this, Betty: Wholesale Handbags .
· Think Local, Pull Global. Did you know that 30% of all products that searchers find through global online searches, even at eBay auction, are finally purchased locally and offline?
If you operate a local retail storefront, get local action. Local shopping, merchant and search sites (like those run by TV/Radio stations, newspapers, city sites and YellowBook listing sites) often have free basic listings. Google or Yahoo! spiders can find you for their Local Search channels if you get your city, region and brick-and-mortar address near the top of your home page copy.
· Get Into Specialized Product Directories. Trade and industry sites – say for wholesalers or handbag specialists or closeout/discount distributors – have online and searchable product directories. You can often buy paid advertising (banner ads or pay-per-click text ads) by product category. Many product directory sites welcome new listings at no charge. You have to meet their Editorial Guidelines, select the right product categories in their unique directory structures, and not be a SPAMMER or Link Farm.
· Use Real Estate on the Browser Window. That title at the top of every web browser window is valuable real estate. The browser title pops into view before complex graphics or active page content even finishes loading in. Don’t waste those precious six-to-eight words with your business name … unless you’re a household word. Use the browser title to say what is unique about your, let’s say, wholesale handbags: 75% Off Sale … Best Designer-Inspired Handbags … Raffle a Designer Handbag of Every Woman’s Dreams … Donate Gently Used Handbags to Job Hunters.
· Get Foot Traffic: Cyber and Real. Links to and from your business web site are one of the biggest ranking boosters around. The more links into your site, the higher your optimized search ranking (secretly scored “Page Ranking” at Google) on results pages. Some web masters try to buy their way onto paid links pages, but that can be dicey. (A lot of link-swapping schemes and pages of nothing-but-links, called Link Farms, made big search engine spiders bite back. Penalties include getting de-listed and dumped in the “Supplemental Index” aka: Dead Zone.)
Get linked the old fashioned way: Offer great tips and timely content that others link to. Customize direct mailings with a unique web page that lets you track cyber-foot traffic. If you do a special Thank-You promotion for returning customers, the unique web page appears as a hot link in an emailing, as well as printed out on a direct snail mailing.
Those are a couple of steps beyond Beginner SEO.
1973 Marvin Gaye…ok, I am an old guy. “Old School” as my daughter describes me.
How am I going to tie Marvin Gaye into a blog post about ebay? Simple, have you been thinking of staring an ebay business, maybe for supplemental income? Lets get it on….really, nothing happens without action and effort. What is holding you back?
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit hiding somewhere inside you, eBay is a great place for a flight test to see if you really have been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, or if you’re best suited to continue to work for someone else. The beauty of testing your wings on eBay is that you can do it part time and see if you have a knack for building up your business. And eBay business, if done correctly, does require a good amount of hard work, but building an eBay business from the ground floor up is a possibility open to just about anyone. If your eBay endeavors really start to pay off, you may just find yourself riding on your own momentum to create quite a substantial E-commerce empire. There have been countless ebay sellers who have started at the kitchen table and ended up with corporate offices making millions of dollars. It is not too late.
No matter what you sell, customer service must always come first. This customer first attitude is the underlying idea behind everything you’ll do to be successful on eBay. The feedback that the customers leave for you, will really define your future success. One bad feedback, especially if you’re new to eBay, can be devastating to your chances of getting people to bid on your auctions and buy your items. There is a great deal of fraud committed on eBay, so the customers that use eBay are extremely wary and find it very hard to trust sellers with low feedback scores. This means that your first strategy to building income through eBay is to get positive feedback, and lots of it.
One of the best methods to get a great deal of positive feedback early on is to sell items that are inexpensive, available to you in large quantities, and are easy to describe accurately. Profit doesn’t even have to be a priority at this stage. Certainly you don’t want to lose money, but your initial sales are solely to get you a decent amount of positive feedback. You can actually accomplish this more efficiently with a single listing using eBay’s Dutch Auction listing option, which allows you to list multiple quantities of the same item under the same listing. This service is discounted compared to listing all of the items individually, but you still can receive positive feedback for each and every one you sell this way. You will want o be a little aggressive in requesting feedback at this stage as well, just remember to always be polite with your requests.
Once you have received a satisfactory amount of positive feedback (this number can vary, but reaching 25 or so is a nice goal), then you will want to start listing more expensive items that have the greater profit margin. You might wonder why receiving a bunch of positive feedback for selling dollar refrigerator magnets will help you once you start to sell expensive jewelry or vintage radios, and the answer is because most eBay buyers don’t go through the effort of finding out what your positive feedback was for, just that you have a high percentage of it. Some will check and those buyers might be discouraged from bidding, but even if you miss out on a few of these you will still be way ahead of the game thanks to the positive feedback from those magnets!
Once you’ve established a solid feedback rating and moved on to selling what you intended to sell to begin with, it’s just an issue of maintaining high standards when it comes to item descriptions and customer service. There are small things you can do to streamline profits and increase sales, such as researching all the add on services offered by eBay like galleries, buy it now, the benefit of starting auctions at a specific time, or setting up an eBay store. But, your success on eBay is almost entirely based on your customers level of satisfaction with your products and your service, so don’t ever let anything else distract you from maintaining high standards in those areas.
EBay is a great example of how supply-and-demand works because sales are based almost exclusively on price. The brick-and-mortar retailer can use advertising, customer loyalty promotions, and other inducements to buy – inducements not available to the online seller. The store-based retailer has expenses the eBay seller doesn’t face: advertising, rent, store maintenance, staff’s salaries, etc. The eBay retailer can sell merchandise at a lower price than the store retailer can – and should.
Nonetheless, it’s been shown that 30% of potential buyers who find what they want on eBay end up buying from a store. Why? This trend has been attributed to slow delivery and inflated shipping costs.
Currently, we are going through a period in which the inflated price of fuel is driving up shipping costs even higher, making the situation yet more difficult for sellers. What can a seller do to deal with this situation? The best approach is to adopt aggressive strategies:
Find, purchase, and sell merchandise that the other guys have yet to find. Americans love gadgets, especially new electronic technology. What will be the next iPhone, Xbox 300, Grand Theft Auto? Explore markets to find out, especially foreign markets that are beating out American manufacturers in pricing and creativity.
Jump on the newest wave, then stock up on merchandise. As they say, “pile ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap”
Pay close attention to your feedback rating. Keep customers happy. When a potential buyer sees a high approval rating, he may be more willing to overlook high shipping charges.
Absorb the cost of posting a lower shipping charge or no charge at all. Do this only if you can make up the difference through what the customer pays for the item. This would pretty much dictate that this strategy be used only with high ticket goods.
Don’t offer warranties beyond the manufacturer’s warranties. Avoid the hassle of handling returns and taking on more shipping charges.
When times are tough and sales are slow you really need to focus on creativity. What separates you from the other ebay sellers? Are you offering incentives to buyers such as:
Discounts on futures purchases…..Include a coupon in every box you ship offering 10-15% off future orders
Free Items with purchase….Take every opportunity to purchase deeply discounted closeouts that you can offer as a premium with every purchase. Make sure the free gift compliments your merchandise.
Discounted shipping for multiple purchases…Advise your prospective bidders that you will combine winning auctions to save money on shipping
Publish a newsletter and promote it in your auctions and About Me page. For example, if you are selling apparel you could write a monthly newsletter about fashion, clothing care and apparel trends. Of course, you would always link your newsletter to your current ebay auctions for repeat sales and traffic!
Share This
